A delicate late eighteenth-century portrait miniature by Thomas Hazlehurst, featuring a woman wearing a small portrait pendant.
This portrait miniature by Thomas Hazlehurst captures the refined aesthetic of late eighteenth-century British portraiture. Hazlehurst, a prolific miniaturist based in Liverpool, developed a recognisable style characterised by soft, stippled brushwork and a delicate handling of facial features. The subject is depicted in a white gown, a fashion choice that reflects the neoclassical influence prevalent during the period. Her hair is styled in the voluminous, powdered manner common to the 1790s.
The most compelling element of the composition is the miniature pendant worn by the sitter. This inclusion of a portrait within a portrait serves as a visual narrative, suggesting a connection to the gentleman depicted in the smaller image. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on subtle gradations of blue and grey to create a sense of depth against the pale background. The signature 'T.H.' is visible on the left side of the sitter's bodice, a mark consistent with Hazlehurst's practice of initialling his works.
Portrait miniatures were highly personal objects, often commissioned as tokens of affection or remembrance. Their small scale required a high degree of technical precision, particularly when working on ivory, a surface that demanded careful preparation to ensure the watercolour adhered correctly. Hazlehurst's ability to render the texture of the fabric and the soft light on the sitter's face demonstrates his technical proficiency. This print reproduces the original work, preserving the intimate scale and the soft, atmospheric quality of the watercolour medium. It offers a glimpse into the private sphere of Georgian society, where personal identity and social status were communicated through these portable, precious objects.
