A formal seventeenth-century portrait by Ferdinand Bol, featuring a woman in a scalloped lace collar and pearl jewellery.
Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this portrait during the height of the Dutch Golden Age. The composition reflects the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture, where the subject is presented against a dark, neutral background to focus attention on her features and attire. Bol employs a controlled use of light, a technique inherited from his master, to model the sitter's face and illuminate the textures of her clothing.
The woman wears a large, scalloped lace collar, which was a fashionable accessory for the Dutch merchant class during this period. Her attire includes a green stomacher with black lace detailing, secured by a small bow. She holds a closed fan in her hands, which are adorned with multiple strings of pearls. These accessories signal her social standing and wealth. The pearls, in particular, are rendered with careful attention to the way light catches their spherical surfaces.
Bol captures the sitter with a direct, steady gaze. Her expression is composed, and her posture is formal. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to balance technical precision with a sense of individual presence. The palette is restrained, relying on earth tones and the stark contrast between the dark background and the white lace. This work is representative of the portraiture style that defined the Dutch Republic, where the rising middle class sought to document their status through commissioned paintings. The focus remains on the material reality of the subject, from the fine weave of the lace to the lustre of the jewellery, providing a clear view into the aesthetic preferences of the era.
