A refined eighteenth-century portrait by Guillaume de Spinny, depicting a lady of the Van de Poll family in a teal gown with lace details.
Guillaume de Spinny, a painter active in the Netherlands during the mid-eighteenth century, captures the refined sensibilities of the Dutch elite in this portrait. The subject, identified as Anna Maria Dedel, is depicted with the poise and sartorial precision characteristic of the period. She is seated in a high-backed chair, her posture relaxed yet formal, reflecting the social expectations of the Dutch patrician class.
The composition focuses on the textures of her attire. The sitter wears a gown of a distinctive teal-green hue, accented by layers of delicate lace at the sleeves and neckline. A string of pearls rests against her throat, drawing the eye to her composed expression. In her right hand, she holds a small sprig of flowers, a common motif in eighteenth-century portraiture that often symbolised virtue or the fleeting nature of life. The background is kept relatively simple, with a draped curtain and panelled wall, ensuring the viewer remains focused on the sitter.
De Spinny employs a soft, diffused light that models the subject's features with subtlety. The brushwork is controlled, allowing for the clear rendering of the fabric folds and the lace patterns. This work provides a window into the domestic and social life of the Van de Poll family, documenting the fashion and aesthetic preferences of the era. The palette is dominated by cool tones, contrasted by the warm, muted red of the cushion upon which her arm rests. This portrait is a representative example of the portraiture commissioned by wealthy families in the Netherlands during the late eighteenth century, documenting both the individual and the status of the household.
