A 1668 oil painting by Jakob Ochtervelt depicting a Dutch family in a domestic interior, featuring a couple at a table and a child playing with a dog.
Jakob Ochtervelt, a contemporary of Vermeer and De Hooch, produced this work in 1668. It depicts a domestic scene within a Dutch interior, a genre for which the artist is recognised. The composition features a seated couple at a table, with a young girl kneeling on the floor in the foreground, interacting with a small spaniel. The father is positioned to the left, his hand resting upon an open book, while the mother sits to his right.
The setting includes a view into an adjacent room, a technique Ochtervelt used to create a sense of spatial depth. The floor in the background room is tiled in a black and white chequerboard pattern, contrasting with the wooden floorboards of the main room. The figures are dressed in the sober, dark attire typical of the Dutch middle class during the seventeenth century, with white collars providing a stark visual contrast. The child, however, wears a lighter grey dress with colourful accents, drawing the eye to the lower portion of the canvas.
Ochtervelt pays close attention to the textures of the domestic environment, from the patterned table cloth to the wooden surfaces and the soft fur of the dog. The lighting is controlled, focusing on the figures and the immediate foreground, leaving the upper reaches of the room in shadow. This work captures a moment of quiet family life, reflecting the values of domesticity and order prevalent in Dutch society at the time. The inclusion of the child and the dog adds a narrative element, suggesting a scene of play within a structured household. The painting remains a clear example of the artist's ability to balance formal portraiture with the informal observation of daily life.
