A sombre etching by Max Klinger from his 1889 series On Death, depicting a family in a stark, light-filled interior surrounded by shadow.
Poor Family is a plate from the series On Death, Part One, Opus XI, produced by the German artist Max Klinger in 1889. Klinger was a master of the graphic arts, and this work demonstrates his technical command of etching and aquatint. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: a dark, atmospheric exterior and a lighter, interior space where the figures reside.
In the foreground, a woman stands holding a child, her gaze directed toward a window or opening that provides the only significant light source. To the right, a seated figure appears slumped or perhaps deceased, draped in heavy fabric. The contrast between the light-filled interior and the surrounding darkness creates a sense of isolation and gravity. Klinger uses fine, dense hatching to build form and shadow, a technique that gives the print its sombre, textured quality.
This work belongs to a period in Klinger's career when he explored themes of mortality, social inequality, and the human condition. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on purely aesthetic concerns, Klinger often incorporated narrative elements that invited the viewer to contemplate the circumstances of his subjects. The starkness of the scene, combined with the precise rendering of light and shadow, reflects the artist's interest in the psychological weight of everyday life. The print is a characteristic example of his ability to merge technical precision with thematic depth, offering a window into the late nineteenth-century German preoccupation with the darker aspects of existence. The work remains a significant example of the Symbolist movement's interest in the intersection of reality and the macabre.
