A traditional Ming Dynasty calligraphy piece by Zhang Fengyi, featuring a seven-syllable poem written on a gold-flecked fan.
This work by Zhang Fengyi (1527-1613) is a fine example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy executed on a folding fan. The piece features a poem written in a seven-syllable meter, a traditional form that demands precision and rhythmic control. Zhang, a native of Changzhou, was known for his literary skill and his mastery of the brush. His style here displays the fluid, expressive qualities characteristic of the period, where the movement of the ink reflects the speed and pressure applied by the calligrapher.
The choice of a fan format dictates the spatial arrangement of the characters. The columns follow the radial lines of the fan, creating a sense of motion that complements the cursive script. The ink sits upon a gold-flecked paper surface, which provides a warm, reflective background that contrasts with the deep black of the ink. This combination of materials was popular among the literati, who valued the integration of poetry, calligraphy, and decorative craft.
Zhang Fengyi was a contemporary of many prominent figures in the late Ming intellectual circle. His work is often associated with the Wu School, which prioritised individual expression and technical refinement. The characters are written with a balance of restraint and spontaneity. Each stroke contributes to the overall structure of the poem, ensuring that the visual form remains as coherent as the literary content. The presence of red seals at the lower left provides a point of visual contrast, indicating the ownership or authentication of the piece. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the subtle variations in ink density, allowing for a close examination of the calligraphic technique employed by the artist.
