A satirical hand-coloured woodcut from the early sixteenth century depicting an owl dressed as a pilgrim, complete with traditional staff and cloak.
This hand-coloured woodcut, attributed to the Monogrammist MH, presents a curious anthropomorphic figure: an owl dressed in the traditional attire of a medieval pilgrim. The bird wears a wide-brimmed hat adorned with symbols, a heavy cloak, and carries a staff and a gourd, which were standard accoutrements for those undertaking religious journeys. The inclusion of the crossed tools on the cloak and hat suggests a specific allegorical or satirical intent, common in the print culture of the early sixteenth century.
The text above the image provides a moralising commentary in French, reflecting the period's fascination with animal fables and the use of zoomorphic characters to critique human behaviour. The owl, often associated with wisdom or, conversely, with foolishness and nocturnal deception, is here cast in a role that questions the authenticity of the pilgrim. The woodcut technique is evident in the firm, clear outlines and the deliberate, somewhat rigid shading used to define the feathers and the folds of the garment. The application of colour is modest, intended to clarify the forms rather than provide realistic depth.
Such prints were produced in significant numbers during the Northern Renaissance, serving as both entertainment and social commentary. They were often collected in albums or pasted into books, functioning as visual shorthand for moral lessons. The composition is straightforward, placing the central figure against a plain background with minimal environmental detail, ensuring the focus remains on the symbolic nature of the owl. This work offers a glimpse into the visual language of the era, where the boundaries between the natural world and human social structures were frequently blurred for didactic purposes.
