A delicate fantasy illustration by Edmund Dulac, created for the 1924 fairy tale 'Stealers of Light' by Marie, Queen of Romania.
This illustration by Edmund Dulac was created for the 1924 publication of 'Stealers of Light', a fairy tale written by Marie, Queen of Romania. Dulac, a French-born artist who became a naturalised British citizen, was a central figure in the early twentieth-century book illustration movement. His work is recognised for its synthesis of diverse visual traditions, including Persian miniature painting and Japanese woodblock prints, which he adapted to suit the tastes of the Edwardian and post-war British public.
The composition features a central female figure playing a stringed instrument, positioned against a dark, stylised forest background. Dulac employs a flattened perspective, prioritising decorative quality over realistic spatial depth. The trees are rendered with organic, amoebic forms that create a sense of mystery, while the figure is draped in garments with geometric patterns reminiscent of folk textiles. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep shadows and muted tones to contrast with the lighter, ethereal presence of the musician.
Dulac's technique involves precise line work combined with delicate washes of watercolour. This approach allows for a balance between the graphic clarity of the ink outlines and the soft, atmospheric quality of the paint. The image reflects the period's interest in escapist literature and the decorative potential of the printed page. By integrating the figure into the surrounding environment through shared patterns and tonal harmony, Dulac creates a cohesive, dreamlike scene that aligns with the narrative themes of the Queen's writing. This print captures the specific aesthetic of the 1920s gift book market, where high-quality colour plates were essential to the appeal of luxury editions.
