A woodblock print from the 'Ōson fuga' by Sakai Hōitsu, featuring a minimalist and atmospheric depiction of Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Ōson fuga', a collection of works by the Edo-period artist Sakai Hōitsu. Hōitsu was a central figure in the revival of the Rinpa school, a movement known for its decorative aesthetic and use of bold, simplified forms. This specific composition depicts Mount Fuji, a subject that held immense cultural weight in Japanese art. The artist employs a restrained palette, focusing on the contrast between the stark white of the mountain peak and the deep, ink-washed shadows that define its slopes.
The composition is divided across two pages, creating a sense of breadth and atmospheric depth. The left side captures the iconic silhouette of the mountain, while the right side introduces softer, more diffuse elements that suggest the surrounding terrain and misty air. The application of ink varies in density, moving from the sharp, dark lines of the mountain ridges to the lighter, textured washes that represent the foothills. This technique demonstrates the artist's mastery of the woodblock medium, where the grain and pressure of the block contribute to the final visual effect.
Sakai Hōitsu, born into a high-ranking samurai family, eventually renounced his status to pursue a life as a painter and poet. His work often bridges the gap between the refined, aristocratic traditions of the earlier Rinpa masters and the more accessible, popular styles of the Edo period. The 'Ōson fuga' reflects this synthesis, offering a view of nature that is both stylised and observant. The paper shows signs of age, with subtle discolouration that adds to the historical character of the print. This piece provides a clear example of the Rinpa school's approach to composition, where negative space is as important as the printed image itself.
