A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting the famous tea house waitress Osen serving a young samurai in a quiet, domestic setting.
Suzuki Harunobu, a central figure in the development of nishiki-e (brocade prints), created this work during the late 1760s. The print depicts Osen, a famous beauty of the Edo period who worked at the Kagiya tea house, serving tea to a young samurai. Harunobu is known for his delicate, slender figures and his ability to capture quiet, domestic moments within the urban culture of Edo.
The composition employs a flattened perspective, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the architectural elements of the tea house frame the two figures. Osen stands gracefully, holding a small tray with a tea cup, while the samurai sits on a bench, his swords visible at his side. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted browns, and blacks to create a sense of calm. The background features a stylised tree and a patterned surface, which provides a sense of place without overwhelming the subjects.
Harunobu was the first to successfully produce full-colour prints using multiple woodblocks, a technique that allowed for greater nuance in shading and detail. This print reflects the popular culture of the time, where tea house waitresses were often treated as celebrities. The artist captures the interaction with a sense of poise, focusing on the subtle gestures of the hands and the tilt of the heads. The print remains a clear example of the aesthetic values of the period, prioritising elegance and balance over dramatic action. By focusing on the everyday life of Edo citizens, Harunobu provided a window into the social dynamics of the era, documenting the fashion and manners of the time through his refined graphic style.
