A detailed 1820 etching by Johann Adam Klein depicting a pack mule navigating the rugged terrain of the Furka Pass in Switzerland.
This etching by Johann Adam Klein, dated 1820, captures a moment of travel through the Furka Pass in the Swiss Alps. Klein, a German artist known for his precise observation of animal anatomy and daily life, depicts a pack mule laden with supplies, accompanied by a traveller. The composition focuses on the physical reality of mountain transit during the early nineteenth century, where such animals provided the primary means of moving goods across difficult terrain.
The line work demonstrates the technical control characteristic of Klein's graphic output. He employs varied hatching to define the texture of the mule's coat, the heavy fabric of the packs, and the rugged, rocky ground. The background features the jagged peaks of the Alps, rendered with a clarity that avoids excessive romanticisation. Instead, the artist presents a grounded, observational record of the journey. The inclusion of a second, smaller figure in the distance provides a sense of scale and reinforces the isolation of the high-altitude route.
Klein spent significant time in Italy and travelled extensively, and his work often reflects a keen interest in the intersection of human activity and the natural environment. This print is an example of the Biedermeier interest in accurate, unadorned depictions of the world. The focus remains on the functional aspects of the scene: the harness, the weight of the load, and the weary posture of the animal. By stripping away unnecessary artifice, Klein allows the viewer to observe the practicalities of nineteenth-century travel. The work functions as both a travel record and a study of animal form, maintaining a balance between technical precision and narrative simplicity.
