A study of a reclining figure by Vincent van Gogh, painted in Paris in 1887, featuring warm tones and rhythmic brushwork.
Painted during his time in Paris, this work represents a departure from the darker, earth-toned palette of Vincent van Gogh's earlier Dutch period. The artist explores the human form with a focus on texture and light, employing short, rhythmic brushstrokes that define the contours of the figure. The reclining woman is positioned against a neutral background, her dark hair cascading down her back in a single braid, which provides a visual anchor for the composition.
Van Gogh's application of paint here is deliberate and controlled. He uses a warm, golden-ochre palette to render the skin, contrasting with the cooler, lighter tones of the bedding and the textured surface beneath the figure. The perspective is intimate, placing the viewer in close proximity to the subject. Unlike his later, more expressive works, this study demonstrates a disciplined approach to anatomy and light, reflecting his engagement with the academic traditions he encountered while living in the French capital.
The composition relies on the diagonal line created by the body, which draws the eye across the canvas from the feet to the head. The background remains relatively indistinct, ensuring that the focus stays on the physical presence of the model. This piece offers a view into the artist's technical development, showing his ability to balance observational accuracy with his developing personal style. The surface quality of the paint, visible in the handling of the fabric and the skin, reveals the tactile nature of his process during this period of experimentation.
