A panoramic woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi showing the early stations of the Tokaido road, featuring Nihonbashi and a view of Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts a panoramic view of the early stages of the Tokaido road, the primary route connecting Edo to Kyoto during the Edo period. Kuniyoshi, a master of the Utagawa school, presents a compressed perspective that allows the viewer to observe multiple stations simultaneously. The composition begins at the bottom left with the bustling Nihonbashi bridge, the official starting point of the journey, and extends across the bay to include Shinagawa, Kawasaki, and Kanagawa.
The print employs a bird-eye view, a technique common in Japanese cartographic art of the nineteenth century. Mount Fuji dominates the upper right quadrant, providing a stable visual anchor against the horizontal bands of the coastline and the sea. Kuniyoshi uses cartouches to label the specific locations, a feature that assists the viewer in navigating the geography of the route. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft blues for the water and muted earth tones for the landmasses, punctuated by the white peak of the mountain.
Kuniyoshi is often associated with dramatic warrior prints, yet this work demonstrates his ability to engage with the popular genre of travel imagery. The print captures the scale of the Tokaido, showing the relationship between the urban centre of Edo and the surrounding coastal provinces. The inclusion of travellers and small architectural details provides a sense of human activity within the broader geographical frame. This piece reflects the period interest in travel and the documentation of famous sites, which became a commercial success for publishers of the time. The print is a fine example of the technical precision achieved by woodblock carvers and printers working under Kuniyoshi's direction, maintaining clear lines and balanced colour application across the entire sheet.
