A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting the bustling Nihonbashi canal in Edo with Mount Fuji visible in the distance.
Nihonbashi in Edo is a woodblock print from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the early 1830s. This series represents a shift in the Ukiyo-e tradition, moving away from depictions of courtesans and actors toward the celebration of Japanese geography and the daily life of the common people. The composition centres on the Nihonbashi bridge, a site of immense commercial activity in the capital.
In the foreground, a bustling crowd of merchants and travellers is captured in transit, their figures rendered with precise, economical lines. The perspective draws the eye down the canal, flanked by rows of white-walled storehouses, toward the distant silhouette of Mount Fuji. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment newly available in Japan at the time, provides a cool contrast to the warm, pale tones of the sky and the architecture. Hokusai balances the geometric rigidity of the buildings with the organic movement of the boats on the water.
This print captures the energy of Edo, the city now known as Tokyo. The artist employs a clear, structured approach to space, using the canal as a visual corridor that connects the immediate foreground to the iconic mountain in the background. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hokusai, particularly in the subtle gradations of the sky and the clean definition of the architectural elements. It remains a primary example of the artist's ability to synthesise human activity with the natural environment, creating a balanced view of a busy urban centre.
