A striking 1899 woodcut portrait of Mark Twain by British artist William Nicholson, featuring bold silhouettes and a minimalist colour palette.
This portrait of the American author Mark Twain is a woodcut by the British artist William Nicholson. It was originally published in 1899 as part of the portfolio titled Twelve Portraits. Nicholson utilised a restricted palette, relying on bold blocks of black ink against a muted ochre background to define the subject. The technique reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which were widely collected and studied by artists in Britain during the late nineteenth century.
Nicholson captures Twain with a focus on his recognisable features, including his thick, unruly hair and signature moustache. The composition is stark and economical. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Nicholson directs the viewer to the author's expression and posture. The figure is rendered in a solid mass of black, which provides a heavy contrast to the lighter paper tone. A small, muted red detail on the book held by Twain provides the only deviation from the primary colour scheme, drawing the eye to the author's hand.
This work demonstrates Nicholson's ability to convey character through simplified forms and strong silhouettes. It is a characteristic example of his graphic work from this period, which prioritised clarity and visual impact over realistic shading or texture. The print remains a notable representation of the author, stripped of the sentimentality often found in contemporary portraiture. It serves as a direct, graphic interpretation of a public figure, executed with the precision and restraint that defined Nicholson's approach to printmaking.
