A classic Dutch Golden Age etching by Jacob Duck, depicting the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child with delicate line work and balanced composition.
This etching, titled Maria met Kind, is a work by the Dutch Golden Age artist Jacob Duck. Known primarily for his genre scenes depicting guardroom life and domestic interiors, this print demonstrates his technical ability in the medium of etching. The composition focuses on the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child positioned upon her lap.
Duck employs a clear distinction between the figures and the surrounding space. The Virgin is rendered with a heavy, dark skirt that occupies the lower portion of the frame, providing a solid base for the composition. Her upper body and the child are depicted with lighter, more delicate line work, allowing the forms to emerge from the paper. The child is shown in a seated posture, looking slightly upward and to the right, while the Virgin gazes down with a calm expression.
Technically, the print relies on varied hatching to create volume and texture. The fabric of the Virgin's garment is defined by dense, parallel lines that suggest weight and shadow, contrasting with the softer, more sparse lines used for the skin tones of the figures. The artist's monogram, I.D., is visible in the lower right corner, confirming the attribution. The work lacks an elaborate background, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the interaction between the two figures. This approach is characteristic of the period, where the focus remained on the human form and the emotional connection between mother and child. The print is a fine example of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking, capturing a quiet, devotional moment through precise line work and balanced composition.
