A sixteenth-century engraving featuring the Virgin and Child surrounded by four narrative scenes from the life of the Virgin and the Passion of Christ.
This sixteenth-century engraving by the artist known as Monogrammist S presents a structured narrative arrangement typical of devotional prints from the Northern Renaissance. The composition centres on a circular medallion depicting the Virgin and Child, surrounded by a radiant halo. This central image acts as the anchor for four smaller, surrounding circular scenes that recount specific moments from the life of the Virgin and the Passion of Christ.
The upper left medallion shows the Annunciation, while the upper right depicts the Coronation of the Virgin. Below, the lower left scene illustrates the Pietà, and the lower right shows the Flagellation of Christ. The use of circular frames, or tondi, allows the artist to compartmentalise these distinct theological events while maintaining a cohesive visual balance on the page. The line work is precise, characteristic of the period's engraving techniques, which prioritised clarity of form and narrative legibility over atmospheric depth.
Such prints were often produced for private devotion or as illustrations for religious texts. The artist, identified only by a monogram, reflects the common practice of the era where printmakers operated within established iconographic traditions. The figures are rendered with a focus on gesture and symbolic posture, ensuring the viewer can immediately identify each scene. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface emphasises the graphic quality of the work. This piece offers a clear view into the visual culture of the sixteenth-century Low Countries, where religious imagery served as a primary medium for personal meditation and instruction. The preservation of the plate marks and the texture of the paper suggest a high-quality impression, capturing the fine details of the original metalwork.
