A detailed etching by Pieter Nolpe after Peter Paul Rubens, depicting the Virgin Mary in glory above a group of saints.
This print by Pieter Nolpe reproduces a composition by Peter Paul Rubens, demonstrating the common practice of the seventeenth century where engravers translated paintings into widely distributed prints. The work depicts the Virgin Mary enthroned upon a cloud, surrounded by putti, while a group of saints stands below in a terrestrial space.
The composition follows the traditional Baroque arrangement of a celestial realm separated from the earthly plane. Mary is positioned at the top, her form softened by the surrounding clouds and the presence of winged figures. Below, the saints are rendered with physical weight and distinct individual expressions. The figure on the far left, Saint Sebastian, is shown with an arrow in his chest, his posture reflecting the physical suffering associated with his martyrdom. Beside him, other figures, including a bishop in ornate vestments, look upward toward the divine vision.
Nolpe employs a variety of line weights to define the textures of the scene. The drapery of the saints' garments is rendered with deep, rhythmic lines that suggest volume and movement. The contrast between the ethereal, lighter treatment of the clouds and the more grounded, solid figures of the saints creates a clear visual hierarchy. The print serves as a record of the original painted composition, capturing the dramatic lighting and emotional intensity characteristic of the Flemish Baroque style. The inclusion of the inscription 'P. P. Rubens pinxit' at the bottom confirms the source of the design, acknowledging the collaborative nature of print production during this period. This piece offers a view into the technical skill of Dutch printmakers who were responsible for disseminating the visual language of the Counter-Reformation across Europe.
