A serene 1903 oil painting by Maximilien Luce, depicting the riverbanks at Mantes with characteristic Neo-Impressionist brushwork and light.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, produced this view of the Seine in 1903. The composition captures the riverbank at Mantes, a location that frequently occupied the artist during his later career. Luce employs a technique characterised by short, rhythmic brushstrokes that build the surface of the canvas, allowing light to vibrate across the water and the grassy slopes. The palette consists of soft blues, greens, and warm ochres, reflecting the atmospheric conditions of the French countryside.
Unlike the rigid, scientific pointillism of Georges Seurat, Luce applied his paint with a more fluid and expressive hand. The foreground features a winding path that draws the eye towards the distant silhouette of the collegiate church of Notre-Dame de Mantes, visible on the horizon. The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, filled with light, broken clouds that suggest a breezy day. This work demonstrates the artist's transition away from the strict divisionism of his earlier years towards a more personal, painterly approach to light and colour. The scene remains grounded in the observation of nature, avoiding excessive stylisation while maintaining a clear sense of structure through the interplay of shadow and illumination. The painting offers a quiet, contemplative view of the river, devoid of human figures, focusing instead on the texture of the terrain and the shifting reflections on the water surface.
