A 1863 etching by Jules de Goncourt, featuring a portrait of Mademoiselle Mayer rendered with expressive hatching and dramatic light.
This etching by Jules de Goncourt, dated 1863, captures the subject, Mademoiselle Mayer, with a focus on the expressive potential of line and shadow. As one half of the famous literary duo, the Goncourt brothers, Jules was also an accomplished amateur printmaker. His approach to the medium reflects a keen interest in the technical possibilities of the etching needle, particularly in how varied hatching can construct form and volume.
The portrait is characterised by a dramatic use of chiaroscuro. The background is rendered with dense, diagonal cross-hatching, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of depth. The face itself is modelled with a combination of stippling and finer lines, allowing for a soft transition of light across the features. The subject's expression is captured with a subtle, knowing quality, typical of the period's interest in psychological realism. The curls framing her face are executed with fluid, calligraphic strokes, providing a contrast to the more rigid, structured lines of the clothing and the dark, atmospheric background.
Jules de Goncourt's work in printmaking often leaned towards the revival of eighteenth-century techniques, yet his execution remains firmly grounded in the nineteenth-century aesthetic. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance technical precision with a spontaneous, sketch-like quality. The monogram 'J.G. 63' appears in the upper right corner, confirming the date of production. This print offers a glimpse into the private artistic pursuits of a figure better known for his contributions to French literature and art criticism. It is a study in light and shadow, demonstrating the capacity of the etched line to convey personality and presence within a compact, monochromatic frame.
