A dramatic oil painting by Henry Fuseli depicting the three witches from Shakespeare's Macbeth, characterised by stark lighting and theatrical tension.
Henry Fuseli, a Swiss-born painter who spent much of his career in London, possessed a fascination with the supernatural and the dramatic potential of literature. This work depicts the three witches from William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Fuseli captures the moment in Act I, Scene 3, where the figures encounter Macbeth and Banquo on the heath.
The composition focuses on the profiles of the three sisters. Their heads are arranged in a sequence, each wearing a simple white hood that contrasts against the surrounding darkness. Fuseli employs a stark chiaroscuro technique, where the light illuminates the sharp, angular features of the figures while the rest of the scene recedes into shadow. Their expressions are fixed and eerie, with one figure gesturing with a pointed finger, suggesting the prophetic nature of their encounter.
Fuseli was a member of the Royal Academy and his work often drew from classical mythology and the plays of Shakespeare. He favoured subjects that allowed for the exploration of human emotion, fear, and the uncanny. By isolating the witches from the broader environment of the heath, he forces the viewer to confront their unsettling presence directly. The painting demonstrates his ability to translate literary tension into a visual medium through the use of dramatic lighting and precise, controlled brushwork. This piece remains a notable example of the late eighteenth-century interest in the gothic and the theatrical, reflecting a period when artists sought to move beyond the constraints of traditional history painting to explore the darker corners of the human imagination.
