A refined woodblock print of lilies by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring delicate peach tones and calligraphic lines against a pale blue background.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a cluster of lilies, rendered with the precision and economy of line characteristic of his later career. Part of a series often referred to as the Large Flowers, the work demonstrates the artist's focus on the natural world, moving away from the human-centric narratives of his earlier prints. The composition is balanced, with the stems and blooms arranged to occupy the vertical space while maintaining a sense of organic growth.
Hokusai employs a limited palette, using soft peach tones for the petals and deep, muted greens for the foliage. The background is a flat, pale blue, which allows the forms of the flowers to emerge without the need for complex perspective or shading. The artist uses calligraphic lines to define the edges of the petals and the veins of the leaves, showing his mastery of the woodblock medium. The print reflects the Edo period interest in botanical studies, where artists sought to capture the essence of flora through careful observation and stylised representation.
The print includes the artist's signature and seal, which are typical of his output during the 1830s. The paper texture remains visible, adding a tactile quality to the image. This work is an example of the kacho-ga genre, or bird-and-flower painting, which was a popular subject for woodblock prints of the time. By isolating the lilies against a neutral background, Hokusai directs the viewer's attention to the structure and form of the plant. The print is a study in simplicity, relying on the interplay of colour and line to convey the subject. It remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in Japanese printmaking during the nineteenth century, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works of great clarity.
