A classic Rococo pastoral scene by François Boucher, depicting a playful moment of interrupted rest in a rustic setting.
Le Sommeil interrompu, or The Interrupted Sleep, captures the quintessential Rococo interest in pastoral fantasy. François Boucher, a master of the French eighteenth-century style, depicts a young woman resting against a tree, her slumber disturbed by a companion who playfully tickles her face with a blade of grass. This scene is set within a dense, leafy environment, typical of the period's preference for artificial, theatre-like nature. The presence of sheep and a small dog adds to the idyllic, rustic atmosphere that was highly fashionable among the French aristocracy of the time.
Technically, this print demonstrates the precision of mid-eighteenth-century engraving. The artist uses varied line weights to differentiate between the soft textures of the woman's gown, the rough bark of the tree, and the foliage overhead. The composition is carefully balanced, with the figures positioned in the foreground to draw the viewer into the intimate moment. The inclusion of a birdcage hanging from a branch and a basket of flowers reinforces the theme of domesticity transposed into a rural setting.
This work was originally part of the collection of Madame de Pompadour, Boucher's most significant patron. It reflects the era's fascination with the concept of the 'galant' life, where the complexities of court existence were set aside for imagined, carefree encounters in the countryside. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic values held by the French elite, prioritising charm, grace, and a light-hearted approach to narrative. The interplay of light and shadow across the figures creates a sense of depth, while the surrounding vegetation provides a frame that keeps the focus firmly on the central interaction. It is a clear example of the decorative and thematic concerns that defined Boucher's career and the broader Rococo movement in France.
