Le Magnifique - Jean-Baptiste Tilliard

A fine reproduction of an eighteenth-century engraving by Jean-Baptiste Tilliard, after a composition by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, depicting a scene from French literature.

This fine art print reproduces an etching and engraving by Jean-Baptiste Tilliard, based on an original composition by the celebrated French painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard. The work depicts a scene from the literary world of the eighteenth century, specifically referencing the narrative of 'Le Magnifique' by Jean de La Fontaine.

In this interior setting, the composition focuses on a trio of figures within a lavishly appointed room. A woman sits gracefully to the left, while two men stand near a doorway, one gesturing as if in mid-conversation. The architectural details, including the heavy drapery and the decorative wall panels, reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the French Rococo period. Tilliard, a skilled engraver, captures the textures of the period costumes and the play of light across the room with precision. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of depth and atmosphere, characteristic of the high-quality reproductive prints produced during this era to disseminate the works of master painters to a wider audience.

The print serves as a window into the social and cultural life of the French aristocracy, where literature and theatre informed visual art. The interaction between the figures suggests a moment of theatrical tension, typical of the narrative-driven art favoured in the late eighteenth century. By translating Fragonard's fluid brushwork into the structured language of the burin and needle, Tilliard preserves the spirit of the original painting while providing a distinct graphic quality. This piece is a fine example of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers in the pre-revolutionary period, where the technical mastery of the printmaker was essential to the circulation of artistic ideas.
