A dynamic oil painting by Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt, depicting a steam train moving through a rugged, mountainous valley with expressive brushwork.
Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt, a Swedish-born American painter, captures the intersection of industrial progress and the natural world in this work. The composition features a steam train traversing a rugged, mountainous terrain. The plume of smoke from the engine rises against the sky, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal movement of the train across the middle ground. Nordfeldt employs a vigorous, gestural application of paint, which is characteristic of his approach to the American West during the early twentieth century.
The foreground is defined by sweeping, rhythmic brushwork that suggests the contours of the valley floor. The artist uses a palette that emphasises the tonal weight of the mountains, creating a sense of mass and physical presence. The train itself is rendered with minimal detail, functioning as a dark, linear element that draws the eye across the frame. This reduction of form allows the viewer to focus on the atmospheric quality of the scene, particularly the interplay between the heavy clouds and the steam.
Nordfeldt spent significant time in New Mexico, and this work reflects the influence of that region on his practice. His style moved away from the precise realism of his earlier printmaking career toward a more subjective, painterly interpretation of the environment. The work avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a direct observation of the mechanical intrusion into the wilderness. The brushwork remains visible throughout the surface, providing a sense of immediacy and energy. This print captures the texture and tonal depth of the original oil painting, preserving the artist's distinct approach to light and form.
