An eighteenth-century etching by the comte de Caylus, reproducing a religious drawing by the Italian master Pietro Perugino.
This etching by the comte de Caylus reproduces a drawing by the Italian Renaissance master Pietro Perugino. The composition depicts the lamentation over the body of Christ, a subject frequently explored in religious art of the period. Caylus, an influential French antiquarian and amateur engraver, produced a series of prints based on drawings held in the private collection of Pierre Crozat. His technique here relies on clean, economical lines to translate the original draughtsmanship into a printed format.
The scene presents a central group of figures mourning over the recumbent form of Christ. The Virgin Mary supports his torso, while other figures attend to his limbs. The background remains minimal, featuring a simple cross and a suggestion of a horizon line, which keeps the focus entirely on the emotional weight of the figures. The style reflects the eighteenth-century interest in documenting and disseminating the works of earlier masters through the medium of print.
Caylus was known for his experimental approach to printmaking, often using a method that mimicked the appearance of original drawings. This particular work demonstrates his ability to capture the grace and balanced composition characteristic of Perugino. The print serves as a record of a specific drawing once housed in the Crozat collection, providing insight into the circulation of art during the Enlightenment. The clarity of the line work allows the viewer to appreciate the structural composition of the original design without the distraction of complex shading or tonal variation. This piece is a fine example of the intersection between historical scholarship and artistic reproduction in the French eighteenth century.
