A hand-coloured woodcut of the Last Supper by Dutch printer Doen Pietersz., dating to the early sixteenth century.
This hand-coloured woodcut depicts the Last Supper, a subject frequently explored by Northern Renaissance printmakers. Doen Pietersz., an active publisher and printer in Amsterdam during the early sixteenth century, produced works that circulated widely among a public interested in devotional imagery. The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions: Christ sits at the centre, surrounded by the apostles, with the central dish placed upon a draped table. The figures are rendered with the bold, graphic lines characteristic of woodblock printing from this period.
The application of colour, likely added by hand shortly after the impression was pulled, provides a distinct visual character to the scene. The palette relies on primary and secondary tones, which help to differentiate the figures and define the spatial arrangement within the room. The architectural elements, such as the arched backdrop, suggest a modest interior setting, keeping the focus on the narrative interaction between the participants. The artist employs a clear, legible style, prioritising the communication of the biblical event over complex perspective or atmospheric effects.
As a piece of early Dutch printmaking, this work offers a glimpse into the production of religious books and pamphlets in the Low Countries. The woodcut medium allowed for the mass production of such images, making them accessible to a broader audience beyond the elite. The presence of the artist's mark on the bench in the foreground confirms the attribution to Pietersz., whose workshop contributed to the dissemination of visual culture in the region. This print remains a representative example of the functional, yet expressive, graphic arts of the early sixteenth century, capturing the aesthetic priorities of the era through its direct line work and deliberate use of colour.
