A nineteenth-century etching by Henry Louis Basan, reproducing a series of head studies originally composed by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1636.
This etching by Henry Louis Basan reproduces a famous plate originally created by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1636. Basan, a French printmaker and publisher, was active in the nineteenth century and produced a series of impressions from original copper plates that had passed through various hands, including those of his father, Pierre-François Basan. The composition features multiple head studies, including several depictions of Saskia van Uylenburgh, Rembrandt's wife. These sketches demonstrate the Dutch master's ability to capture fleeting expressions and character through economical line work.
The print displays the characteristic cross-hatching and fluid line quality associated with Rembrandt's etching technique. By grouping several distinct studies on a single sheet, the work offers a glimpse into the artist's studio practice, where such plates functioned as exercises in observation. The central figure, often identified as Saskia, is rendered with soft, delicate strokes that define the contours of her face and the texture of her hair. Other figures surrounding her show varying degrees of finish, ranging from light outlines to more densely worked shadows.
As a nineteenth-century impression, this print provides an opportunity to examine the technical approach of the Dutch Golden Age. The paper retains a period-appropriate tone, and the ink application reflects the specific printing standards of the Basan workshop. This piece is suitable for those interested in the history of printmaking and the transmission of artistic techniques across centuries. It captures the essence of Rembrandt's observational style while documenting the role of later publishers in preserving these copper plates for subsequent generations of collectors.
