A fine mezzotint portrait of King Charles II by the British printmaker Charles Turner, capturing the monarch in traditional royal regalia.
This mezzotint by Charles Turner depicts King Charles II in a formal, seated pose. The work draws upon the visual language of seventeenth-century royal portraiture, capturing the monarch with the regalia of his office. The crown and sceptre rest upon a table draped in a heavy, patterned cloth, while the King sits in an ornate chair. His attire includes the voluminous periwig and lace-trimmed garments characteristic of the Restoration period.
Charles Turner was a highly skilled printmaker, known for his mastery of the mezzotint process. This technique allowed for a wide range of tonal values, from deep, velvety blacks to soft, luminous highlights. By manipulating the copper plate with a rocker and scraper, Turner achieved a smooth transition between light and shadow, which gives the fabric of the King's robes and the texture of the background a tangible quality. The composition is balanced, with the figure of the monarch positioned to command attention, while the architectural elements in the background provide a sense of place.
This print reflects the nineteenth-century interest in historical subjects and the reproduction of earlier portraiture. Turner often worked after paintings by masters such as Sir Peter Lely or Sir Anthony van Dyck, adapting their compositions into the medium of the print. The result is a work that conveys the authority and status associated with the Stuart monarchy. The attention to detail, particularly in the rendering of the lace, the embroidery on the table covering, and the subtle play of light across the King's features, demonstrates the technical precision that defined Turner's career. This piece offers a view into the historical iconography of the British monarchy as interpreted through the lens of a nineteenth-century printmaker.
