A 1920 Dada work by Max Ernst, featuring a geometric, mechanical structure set against an ambiguous, textured background.
Katharina Ondulata, painted by Max Ernst in 1920, represents a period of experimentation within the Cologne Dada movement. The composition features a central, mechanical-like structure constructed from geometric patterns and rigid forms. This central figure stands against a backdrop that suggests a horizon line, yet the spatial logic remains intentionally disjointed. Ernst employs a combination of precise, linear drafting and textured, painterly surfaces to create a sense of ambiguity.
To the left of the central form, a swirling, circular motif incorporates a gear-like element, suggesting the influence of industrial imagery common in early twentieth-century avant-garde art. The colour palette relies on muted earth tones, punctuated by specific areas of blue and red, which draw the eye across the canvas. The background is treated with a stippled effect, adding a layer of visual noise that contrasts with the sharp edges of the primary subject.
Ernst often utilised collage techniques to inform his painting, and this work reflects that methodology through its assembly of disparate, non-naturalistic elements. The title itself adds another layer of enigma, typical of the artist's interest in linguistic play and the subversion of traditional meaning. By placing these mechanical and abstract shapes within a pseudo-representational space, Ernst invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the machine age and the irrationality of the human psyche. The work remains a clear example of the artist's transition from the chaotic energy of Dada toward the more structured, dream-like imagery that would define his later career in Surrealism.

Artist Biography
Max Ernst
He was born in Brühl, near Cologne, and studied philosophy and art history at the University of Bonn. He had no formal art training. He saw a Picasso exhibition, joined the Rhineland Expressionists, served in the German army during the First World War (artillery), and emerged with what he described as a compulsion to find something beyond rational thought. Dada gave him the method. Surrealism gave him the framework.
His collage novels, made from cut-up Victorian engravings reassembled into dreamlike narratives, are among the most original works of the twentieth century. Une Semaine de Bonte (A Week of Kindness, 1934) is a series of 182 collages arranged in five chapters, each associated with an element and a day of the week. The imagery is violent, erotic, and funny. The source material, melodramatic Victorian illustrations, is treated with deadpan seriousness.
He married four times. His second wife was Peggy Guggenheim (briefly). His fourth was the painter Dorothea Tanning. He moved to America during the war, lived in Sedona, Arizona, and then returned to France. He died in Paris in 1976, the night before his eighty-fifth birthday.
