A sixteenth-century engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the classical myth of the infant Jupiter being nurtured by the goat Amalthea.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts the classical myth of the infant Jupiter being nurtured by the goat Amalthea in a secluded cave on Mount Ida. Bonasone, a Bolognese artist active during the sixteenth century, was known for his technical skill in engraving and his ability to translate complex compositions into the medium of print. His work often drew inspiration from the masters of the Italian Renaissance, and this piece reflects the stylistic conventions of the period through its balanced arrangement of figures and its focus on anatomical precision.
The scene is set within a naturalistic environment, where the figures are positioned to guide the viewer across the frame. To the left, a female figure reaches towards a structure, while the central focus remains on the goat being held by a male figure, likely representing a shepherd or a guardian of the infant god. To the right, a seated youth rests near a small group of goats, adding a sense of pastoral calm to the mythological narrative. The use of line work creates depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the foliage and the musculature of the figures.
Bonasone’s approach to the engraving process allows for a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows within the cave to the lighter areas that define the forms of the figures. The composition is typical of the period, prioritising a clear narrative structure and a harmonious relationship between the human and animal subjects. This print offers a glimpse into the way Renaissance artists engaged with classical literature and mythology, reinterpreting ancient stories through the lens of contemporary artistic practice. It remains a fine example of the printmaking traditions that flourished in Italy during the sixteenth century, demonstrating the attention to detail and technical proficiency that defined the work of Bonasone and his contemporaries.
