A sixteenth-century Italian engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the mythological encounter between Juno and the god of Sleep, framed by classical architectural motifs.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts a scene from classical mythology, specifically the interaction between the goddess Juno and the personification of Sleep. Bonasone, a Bolognese artist active during the sixteenth century, was known for his technical skill in copperplate engraving and his ability to translate complex narratives into structured visual compositions.
The central panel shows Juno, draped in classical robes, gesturing towards the winged figure of Sleep. The composition is framed by an architectural border featuring herms and decorative motifs, a common stylistic choice in Renaissance printmaking that draws inspiration from classical antiquity. Below the main scene, two putti are positioned at the base, while an Italian inscription provides context for the narrative. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the period's approach to printmaking, where the burin was used to create clear contours and subtle shading through cross-hatching.
Bonasone often drew inspiration from the works of contemporary painters, including Raphael and Parmigianino, and his prints were instrumental in disseminating these artistic ideas across Europe. The work demonstrates the Renaissance interest in humanism and the revival of ancient myths, presenting them with a sense of theatricality and order. The framing elements, including the sphinx-like figures at the top and the bearded herms on the sides, add a layer of decorative complexity that balances the central narrative. This print is a representative example of the mid-sixteenth-century Italian printmaking tradition, where the marriage of text and image was used to convey literary themes to a wider audience. The clarity of the figures and the balanced arrangement of the scene reflect the aesthetic priorities of the time, focusing on anatomical accuracy and narrative legibility.
