A detailed etching and engraving by Ephraim Gottlieb Krüger, reproducing a biblical scene originally painted by Ferdinand Bol.
This fine art print reproduces a composition by the Dutch Golden Age painter Ferdinand Bol. Ephraim Gottlieb Krüger, a German engraver active in Dresden, executed this work to document the holdings of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. The scene depicts the biblical narrative of Joseph introducing his father, Jacob, to the Egyptian Pharaoh.
Krüger employs a sophisticated range of tonal values to translate Bol's original oil painting into the medium of print. The Pharaoh sits in a position of authority, draped in heavy, ornate robes, while Joseph stands beside him, gesturing towards the kneeling Jacob. The composition relies on the interplay of light and shadow to define the figures and the architectural space. The use of cross-hatching and stippling creates a sense of texture, particularly in the rendering of the velvet fabrics and the intricate embroidery on the royal garments.
The print includes the original publication details at the base, noting its origin from the Elector's Gallery in Dresden. Such prints were produced to disseminate knowledge of European masterworks to a wider audience during the eighteenth century. The technical precision of the engraving reflects the high standards of the Dresden school of printmaking. The figures are rendered with a focus on dramatic gesture and emotional weight, characteristic of the seventeenth-century Dutch approach to biblical subjects. This reproduction offers a clear view of the composition, capturing the balance between the regal presence of the Pharaoh and the humble posture of Jacob. It is a study in the translation of painterly light effects into the linear language of the copperplate.
