A sixteenth-century engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the mythological scene of Ixion embracing a cloud, framed by an ornate architectural border.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts the classical myth of Ixion, the king of the Lapiths, who was punished by Zeus for his hubris. In the central scene, Ixion is shown embracing a cloud, which Zeus had fashioned into the likeness of the goddess Hera to deceive him. The composition is framed by an elaborate architectural border, featuring two caryatid-like figures on the sides and putti at the top. The scene is accompanied by an Italian inscription, which reflects on the nature of desire and the pursuit of unattainable goals.
Bonasone, an Italian painter and engraver active in Bologna, was known for his technical skill in reproducing the works of other masters, such as Michelangelo and Raphael, as well as his own original compositions. This print demonstrates his command of the burin, using fine lines to create depth and texture within the figures and the surrounding decorative elements. The figures are rendered with the anatomical precision characteristic of the High Renaissance, while the surrounding frame adds a layer of Mannerist artifice. The contrast between the central narrative and the structured, ornamental border creates a balanced visual experience. The print serves as a record of the period's interest in classical mythology and the moralising themes often associated with such narratives. The inclusion of the text below the image provides a direct link to the literary traditions that informed the visual arts of the sixteenth century. This museum-grade print captures the fine details of the original engraving, allowing for a clear view of the cross-hatching and the delicate shading techniques employed by Bonasone to define the forms of the figures and the surrounding architectural details.
