A detailed Renaissance engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicting a dense battle scene between the Israelites and the Amalekites.
This engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicts a chaotic scene of combat between the Israelites and the Amalekites. As a Venetian artist active during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Mocetto was heavily influenced by the graphic style of Andrea Mantegna. The composition is crowded with figures on horseback and foot soldiers, all engaged in a dense, overlapping struggle. The artist employs a rigorous system of parallel hatching to define the musculature of the horses and the metallic sheen of the armour, creating a sense of volume within a flattened, frieze-like space.
The figures are dressed in a mixture of classical and contemporary armour, a common practice in Renaissance depictions of biblical or historical events. The central figure, likely representing a leader of the Israelite forces, is shown in a dynamic pose, wielding a weapon amidst the fray. The signature 'HIERONIMVS' appears at the bottom centre, identifying the artist. The lack of a defined background allows the viewer to focus entirely on the physical exertion and the rhythmic repetition of spears, shields, and limbs. This work demonstrates the technical precision required for early copperplate engraving, where every line must be carefully placed to convey texture and form. The print reflects the period interest in classical antiquity and the adaptation of such themes into religious narratives. It remains a clear example of the Venetian school's approach to printmaking, where the emphasis lies on the clarity of the line and the structural integrity of the human form.
