A graphite sketch from 1943 depicting the interior of a barracks, capturing the cramped conditions and daily life of the period.
This graphite sketch, titled In de barak, offers a direct observation of life within a confined space. Dated 5 April 1943, the work captures the interior of a barracks, likely during the artist's period of internment. The composition is structured around the utilitarian architecture of the room, featuring tiered bunks and exposed wooden beams that dominate the upper portion of the frame.
To Frank-Stoltz employs a light, economical line to record the mundane details of this environment. Items of clothing hang from the rafters, while boxes and personal effects are stored on shelves, suggesting a cramped existence where every centimetre of space is utilised. Below, figures are depicted resting on their bunks, their forms rendered with minimal detail to convey a sense of quiet exhaustion. The artist focuses on the physical reality of the setting, avoiding sentimentality in favour of a documentary approach.
The sketch is executed on paper that shows signs of age, adding to the historical weight of the image. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to look down into the sleeping quarters. By recording the specific date and the location, the artist provides a clear temporal anchor for the scene. This drawing functions as a personal record of survival, documenting the visual environment of a specific moment in the mid-twentieth century. The lack of heavy shading or dramatic contrast keeps the focus on the structural arrangement of the barracks and the presence of the individuals within it. It is a work of observation, capturing the atmosphere of a temporary home under difficult circumstances.
