A serene winter scene by Claude Monet, capturing the Seine river filled with ice floes during the cold winter of 1867-1868.
Painted during the winter of 1867-1868, this work captures the Seine during a period of extreme cold. Claude Monet depicts the river choked with ice, a phenomenon that occurred when the thaw began to break up the frozen surface. The composition is dominated by a muted, atmospheric palette of greys, whites, and pale blues, reflecting the overcast sky and the frigid conditions of the French countryside.
Monet focuses on the quiet interaction between the human figures and the frozen riverbank. Small, dark silhouettes of people are positioned along the snowy edge, providing a sense of scale against the vast, icy expanse. The boats, pulled onto the shore, remain idle, waiting for the thaw to clear the waterway. The artist employs a restrained brushwork that captures the stillness of the scene, avoiding the more fragmented application of paint seen in his later works. The reflection of the ice and the distant trees in the dark, sluggish water creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye towards the horizon.
This painting belongs to a series of winter studies Monet produced while living in the vicinity of Bougival. It documents the harsh reality of the season, moving away from the romanticised depictions of winter common in earlier academic art. By choosing a subject defined by its cold, grey tonality, Monet explores the subtle variations of light on snow and ice. The work remains a precise observation of a specific environmental condition, rendered with a focus on tonal harmony and spatial clarity. It offers a glimpse into the early development of the Impressionist approach to capturing fleeting meteorological effects in the natural world.
