A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring a detailed study of white hydrangea blossoms and a swallow against a yellow background.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai belongs to a series of large-format flower studies produced during the 1830s. The composition focuses on a cluster of white hydrangea blossoms, rendered with precise outlines and subtle colour gradients. A swallow is depicted in flight to the right, its form captured in a moment of motion. The background consists of a flat, yellow field, which provides a contrast to the cool tones of the flowers and the dark plumage of the bird.
Hokusai utilised the kacho-ga genre, or bird-and-flower painting, to explore natural forms through the technical constraints of the woodblock medium. The print demonstrates his attention to botanical accuracy, balanced by the stylistic conventions of the Edo period. The use of a solid, non-representational background colour is a characteristic feature of this series, directing the viewer's attention to the subject matter without the distraction of a detailed environment. The lines are clean and controlled, reflecting the skill of the carvers who translated Hokusai's designs into the final printed format.
This work is an example of the artist's later output, where he moved away from the busy urban scenes of his earlier career to focus on the observation of nature. The print maintains a sense of stillness, despite the movement implied by the swallow. It is a representative piece of Japanese printmaking, showing the aesthetic priorities of the time, including the emphasis on negative space and the careful arrangement of organic shapes. The print remains a clear record of the collaboration between the artist, the block cutter, and the printer, all of whom were necessary to achieve the final result.
