An evocative illustration by Edmund Dulac from his 1909 edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, capturing a contemplative moment in a twilight garden.
Edmund Dulac produced this illustration for the 1909 edition of Edward FitzGerald's translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. As a central figure in the early twentieth-century British gift book market, Dulac utilised his training in French academic painting to create atmospheric, dreamlike scenes. This work captures a quiet moment between two figures in a garden setting, reflecting the poem's themes of transience and earthly pleasure.
The composition employs a muted palette, dominated by cool blues, soft greys, and earthy tones that suggest the twilight hour. The male figure, dressed in robes adorned with paisley motifs, raises a chalice, while the female figure holds a vessel. Their expressions are contemplative, set against a backdrop of architectural arches and dark, silhouetted trees. Dulac's technique relies on delicate washes of watercolour, allowing for subtle transitions of light and shadow across the figures and the surrounding environment.
Dulac's approach to this commission involved a synthesis of Persian miniature aesthetics and Western illustrative traditions. He avoided the heavy outlines common in other contemporary works, opting instead for soft edges that contribute to the ethereal quality of the scene. The figures appear grounded yet detached from the physical space, a characteristic of his narrative style. This print offers a view into the specific visual language of the Edwardian era, where exoticism and literary romanticism merged to define the aesthetic of luxury book production. The attention to costume detail and the atmospheric treatment of the garden space demonstrate his technical precision and his ability to interpret complex poetic verses through a singular, evocative image.
