A refined woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicting the warrior Hino Kumawakamaru, featuring delicate line work and traditional Japanese calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicts the historical figure Hino Kumawakamaru, a character associated with the Taiheiki, a 14th-century epic chronicling the wars between the Northern and Southern Courts of Japan. Gakutei, a pupil of Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai, was a master of the surimono format. These prints were privately commissioned, often for poetry circles, and are characterised by their high-quality paper, sophisticated printing techniques, and inclusion of kyoka (humorous or witty verse).
The composition features Kumawakamaru standing in a doorway, his posture suggesting a moment of quiet observation or hesitation. He wears traditional samurai armour, rendered with a repeating geometric pattern that contrasts with the surrounding architectural elements. To the left, a portable lantern sits on the floor, providing a sense of domestic interiority that balances the martial nature of the subject. The background is decorated with a subtle, interlocking fretwork pattern, a common motif in Japanese design that adds texture without overwhelming the central figure.
Gakutei employs a restrained colour palette, relying on muted earth tones and soft reds to define the figure and his attire. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper section of the print integrates text and image, a hallmark of the surimono tradition. The lines are precise and controlled, reflecting the technical skill required for such refined printing. This work offers a glimpse into the cultural life of the Edo period, where historical narratives were frequently reinterpreted through the lens of contemporary aesthetic values and poetic expression. The print remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of Japanese printmaking, where the artist, poet, and carver worked in close coordination to produce a singular, highly finished object.
