A dramatic seventeenth-century etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the tragic discovery of Polydorus by his mother, Hecuba, from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts a tragic moment from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Hecuba, the queen of Troy, discovers the corpse of her son Polydorus washed upon the shore after his betrayal by Polymestor. Tempesta, a Florentine artist known for his prolific output in printmaking, employs a dramatic narrative style characteristic of the early seventeenth century. The composition is structured to guide the viewer from the foreground figures, whose gestures of grief are rendered with expressive lines, toward the distant, rugged coastline.
The artist uses a system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the drapery of the figures and the texture of the sand and water. The figures are arranged in a theatrical manner, with Hecuba reaching out in despair while her attendants react with raised arms. This work belongs to a larger series of illustrations documenting the myths of Ovid, a project that demonstrated Tempesta's ability to condense complex narrative sequences into single, legible frames. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Hecuba trucidatum a Polymnestore Polydorum reperit', provides the necessary context for the scene, identifying the victim and the perpetrator.
Tempesta's approach to the human form reflects the influence of his training in Rome, where he absorbed the lessons of Mannerism and the emerging Baroque aesthetic. The figures possess a sculptural quality, their movements frozen in a moment of high emotional intensity. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to remain on the central tragedy. This print serves as an example of the technical precision achieved by Tempesta, whose work was widely circulated across Europe during his lifetime. The clarity of the etching process allows for the fine details of the facial expressions and the folds of the garments to remain visible, providing a clear window into the classical themes that occupied the minds of artists and scholars during this period.
