A delicate study of the head of God the Father, rendered in black and red chalk on blue paper by the Florentine Baroque master Carlo Dolci.
This drawing, titled Head of God the Father, is a characteristic example of the meticulous draughtsmanship of the Florentine Baroque painter Carlo Dolci. Executed in black and red chalk with white heightening on blue paper, the work demonstrates the artist's preference for soft transitions and a devotional quality in his subjects. The blue paper serves as a mid-tone, allowing the white chalk to define the facial structure and the light reflecting off the hair and beard.
Dolci is known for his highly finished religious works, often characterised by a sense of quiet contemplation. In this study, the figure of God the Father is rendered with a gentle, humanised expression. The artist employs fine hatching to model the features, creating a sense of volume while maintaining the delicate surface of the paper. The use of red chalk for the flesh tones provides a subtle warmth, contrasting with the cooler tones of the blue paper and the black chalk used for the deeper shadows in the eyes and hair.
Such drawings were often preparatory studies for larger oil paintings, yet they possess a complete aesthetic quality of their own. The signature at the bottom right, 'Di Carlo Dolci', confirms the attribution to the artist. The composition is focused entirely on the head, removing any distracting elements to ensure the viewer engages directly with the subject. This approach aligns with the Counter-Reformation ideals prevalent in seventeenth-century Italy, where art was intended to inspire piety and focus through clarity and emotional accessibility. The preservation of the paper's texture and the precise application of the chalk media make this a fine example of Italian Baroque drawing techniques.
