A seventeenth-century Dutch etching depicting a travelling musician, known as Hans Fedlaer, captured in fine, expressive lines.
This etching by Gillis van Scheyndel (I) captures a solitary figure identified as Hans Fedlaer. The subject is depicted in a rural setting, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a heavy cape, while operating a small hurdy-gurdy. Van Scheyndel, a Dutch printmaker active during the seventeenth century, frequently documented the lives of common people, itinerant musicians, and beggars. His work provides a window into the social strata of the Dutch Golden Age, focusing on the everyday reality of those living on the margins of society.
The composition is sparse, placing the figure against a simple background of a fence and distant trees. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the subject's clothing and the mechanical details of the instrument. The etching technique allows for a subtle range of tonal variation, creating a sense of atmosphere despite the modest scale of the work. The figure stands with a slight slouch, suggesting the weariness of a travelling performer. The inscription at the base, Hans Fedlaer, identifies the character, a common practice in series of prints depicting various social types or street performers of the period.
Van Scheyndel was known for his technical proficiency in etching, often producing small-scale works that were collected by contemporaries interested in the diversity of human character. This print is a representative example of his interest in the picturesque qualities of the lower classes. The work avoids idealisation, opting instead for a direct observation of the subject. It remains a clear record of the visual culture of the seventeenth-century Netherlands, where the depiction of street life became a popular subject for artists and collectors alike.
