A hand-coloured woodcut depicting the Entombment of Christ, produced by the Dutch printer Doen Pietersz. during the early sixteenth century.
This hand-coloured woodcut depicts the Entombment of Christ, a subject frequently explored by Northern Renaissance printmakers. Doen Pietersz., an active publisher and printer in Amsterdam during the early sixteenth century, produced works that reflect the aesthetic conventions of the period. The composition focuses on the sorrowful figures gathered around the sarcophagus, with the central figure of Christ being lowered into the tomb. The artist employs a clear, narrative style, typical of woodcuts intended for devotional books or broadsides.
The visual execution relies on bold outlines, which define the forms of the figures and the architectural elements of the tomb. The application of colour, likely added by hand after the initial printing, uses a palette of primary and secondary hues to distinguish the garments of the mourners. The figures are arranged in a compact, vertical grouping, which directs the viewer's attention to the central action. The background features a suggestion of a rocky landscape, providing a sense of place while maintaining the focus on the human drama.
Pietersz. operated within a period where the production of printed images became increasingly accessible to a wider audience. This work demonstrates the technical approach of the era, where the woodblock provided the structure and the hand-colouring added a layer of visual interest. The print captures the emotional weight of the scene through the gestures and expressions of the participants. As a piece of historical printmaking, it offers insight into the visual culture of the Dutch Renaissance, where religious narratives were translated into portable, reproducible formats for private contemplation. The presence of the monogram at the base of the image identifies the source, linking this print to the broader output of the Amsterdam printing trade during the first half of the sixteenth century.
