A seventeenth-century topographical drawing by Abraham de Verwer, capturing the Château de Vincennes in black chalk and grey wash.
This drawing by Abraham de Verwer depicts the Château de Vincennes, a royal fortress located on the outskirts of Paris. De Verwer, a Dutch artist active during the seventeenth century, was known for his maritime subjects and topographical studies produced during his travels. In this work, the artist employs black chalk and grey wash to capture the architectural silhouette of the castle as it appears behind a dense line of trees.
The composition is structured around the horizontal expanse of the landscape, with the castle buildings rising above the foliage. De Verwer uses light washes to suggest the atmospheric conditions of the sky, creating a sense of depth through the layering of grey tones. The drawing reflects the practice of Dutch artists who travelled abroad to document foreign architecture and urban environments. The focus remains on the structural details of the fortress, including its towers and the chapel, rendered with a direct, observational approach typical of the period.
Unlike the more finished oil paintings of the era, this study offers a glimpse into the artist's process of recording visual information. The paper retains its original texture, and the application of wash provides a subtle tonal range that defines the forms of the trees and the castle walls. The work serves as a record of the site as it existed in the seventeenth century, demonstrating the artist's ability to balance architectural precision with the fluid qualities of wash media. This piece is a representative example of the topographical sketches that circulated among collectors and artists, documenting European landmarks with a focus on clarity and spatial arrangement.
