A detailed 1791 etching by Johann Friedrich Frauenholz capturing the weathered ruins of the Circus of Maxentius in Rome.
This etching by Johann Friedrich Frauenholz depicts the ruins of the Circus of Maxentius, situated along the Appian Way in Rome. Produced in 1791, the work reflects the period fascination with classical antiquity and the aesthetic of the picturesque. The composition focuses on a substantial fragment of the ancient structure, where crumbling brickwork and arched masonry are partially reclaimed by dense foliage.
Frauenholz employs precise line work to define the textures of the weathered stone and the organic forms of the vegetation. The interplay of light and shadow across the ruin provides a sense of volume and depth, while the inclusion of small figures and animals in the foreground offers a sense of scale against the monumental architecture. The sky is rendered with subtle hatching, suggesting a calm atmosphere that contrasts with the decay of the Roman site.
As a German artist active in the late eighteenth century, Frauenholz participated in the tradition of the Grand Tour, where artists documented the remnants of the Roman Empire for a European audience. This print captures the intersection of historical memory and natural encroachment, a common theme in the topographical art of the era. The work is executed with a technical clarity that prioritises the structural integrity of the ruin, providing a detailed record of the site as it appeared at the end of the eighteenth century. The etching demonstrates a mastery of tonal variation, achieved through controlled cross-hatching and varying line density, which brings the weathered surfaces to life without the need for colour.
