A 1989 screenprint by Dutch artist Jan Roeland, featuring a balanced arrangement of geometric shapes and a bold, high-contrast colour palette.
Jan Roeland, a Dutch artist known for his disciplined approach to form and colour, produced this screenprint in 1989. The work reflects his interest in the reduction of visual elements to their most basic components. By stripping away representational detail, Roeland invites the viewer to engage directly with the interaction of shape, line, and hue.
The composition is divided into two primary vertical zones. On the left, a yellow column is bisected by a thin, dark vertical line, topped with a circular orange motif containing a white centre. This arrangement suggests a stylised, almost mechanical interpretation of a flower or a totem. The right side of the print is dominated by a large, flat rectangle of bright lime green, which provides a stark contrast to the warmer tones on the left. The entire image is set against a muted olive background, which acts as a unifying field for the disparate geometric elements.
Roeland's technique relies on the precision of the screenprinting process to achieve clean edges and uniform colour application. There is no attempt to create depth or texture; the image remains resolutely two-dimensional. This flatness is a hallmark of his practice, where the focus remains on the balance of the composition rather than the illusion of space. The work demonstrates a clear logic in its construction, with each element placed to create a sense of equilibrium. It is an exercise in restraint, where the artist achieves a specific visual tension through the careful selection of a limited palette and the arrangement of simple geometric forms. The print is a representative example of late twentieth-century Dutch abstraction, showing a clear lineage from earlier modernist movements while maintaining a distinct, contemporary sensibility.
