A sixteenth-century hand-coloured woodcut by Dutch printer Doen Pietersz. depicting the Nativity of Christ.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Dutch printer and publisher Doen Pietersz. depicts the Nativity scene. The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions of the early sixteenth century, placing the Holy Family within a rustic, architectural setting. The Virgin Mary kneels in prayer before the infant Jesus, who lies in a simple wooden manger. Saint Joseph stands nearby, leaning on a staff, while the ox and ass are visible in the background, reinforcing the humble circumstances of the birth.
The print exhibits the characteristic bold, graphic lines of woodblock printing from the period. The application of colour, likely added by hand after the initial impression, provides a distinct visual quality to the figures and the surrounding environment. The artist employs a clear, narrative approach, typical of devotional works intended for inclusion in printed books or as individual broadsheets for a wider audience. The inclusion of a small angel in the upper register adds a spiritual dimension to the scene, while the architectural elements, such as the brickwork and the stable structure, ground the event in a recognisable, albeit stylised, space.
Doen Pietersz. was active in Amsterdam during the first half of the sixteenth century, operating a press that produced various religious and secular texts. His work reflects the transition of print culture in the Netherlands, where woodcuts were essential for the dissemination of religious imagery. This piece captures the aesthetic of the Northern Renaissance, prioritising clear communication of the biblical narrative through accessible, graphic means. The print remains a representative example of early Dutch book illustration, showing the technical limitations and artistic choices of the era. The use of colour, while simple, enhances the legibility of the figures against the background, ensuring the primary subjects remain the focus of the viewer.
