A refined Impressionist still life by Gustave Caillebotte, featuring a single rose and forget-me-nots in a patterned vase, accented by a butterfly.
This still life by Gustave Caillebotte captures a singular, full-blown rose accompanied by delicate forget-me-nots, arranged within a decorative ceramic vase. The composition is marked by a deliberate simplicity, placing the floral subject against a muted, neutral background. A single butterfly is depicted in flight to the right, introducing a sense of movement and fleeting time to the otherwise static arrangement.
Caillebotte, often associated with the Impressionist circle, applied a controlled technique here that differs from the more fragmented brushwork of his contemporaries. The rose is rendered with soft, layered petals, while the vase features distinct blue and red patterns that contrast with the organic forms of the flowers. The surface beneath the vase is covered by a textured red cloth, providing a warm base that anchors the objects within the frame.
Unlike his urban scenes of Paris, this work reflects Caillebotte's private interest in horticulture and domestic subjects. He maintained a garden at his property in Petit-Gennevilliers, where he cultivated many of the flowers that appear in his later paintings. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the physical presence of the objects and the play of light across the different textures of fabric, ceramic, and petal. The inclusion of the butterfly serves as a traditional memento mori element, suggesting the transient nature of the bloom. This print captures the precise colour balance and the quiet atmosphere of the original oil painting, making it a suitable addition for those interested in the domestic side of the Impressionist movement.
