A refined woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicting two dancers in synchronised motion, featuring traditional Japanese motifs and elegant composition.
Yashima Gakutei, a student of Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai, produced this woodblock print as part of a series depicting the Furuichi dance. This work belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often distributed among poetry circles. These prints typically feature high-quality paper and sophisticated printing techniques, such as metallic pigments or embossing, to appeal to a refined audience.
The composition presents two dancers in synchronised motion, their bodies angled to suggest a fluid, rhythmic performance. They wear elaborate kimono adorned with circular motifs, which echo the pattern of the lanterns suspended above the stage. The background features a stylised pine tree, a common element in Japanese iconography representing longevity and resilience. The dark, ink-heavy sky provides a contrast to the lighter tones of the dancers' garments and the wooden floorboards of the stage.
Gakutei was known for his ability to integrate text and image, a skill evident here in the placement of the calligraphy within the dark upper register. The print captures a specific cultural moment, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period. The repetition of circular forms, from the lanterns to the patterns on the fabric, creates a sense of visual unity across the frame. The print demonstrates the technical precision required for surimono production, where the alignment of multiple woodblocks was necessary to achieve the desired detail. This piece offers a glimpse into the performative traditions of the time, preserved through the medium of the woodblock print.
